Balbriggan Through to McGee Cup Final

Balbriggan make the McGee Cup Final after a hard fought semi-final against Navan. Final score 9 v 3. Billy Phelan kicked Balbriggans 3 penalties. He kicked 2 in the first half giving Balbriggan a 6 v 0 lead at half-time. He scored a third penalty to give Balbriggan a 9 v 0 lead, early in the second half. Both teams missed a number of penalties, but half way through the second half, Navan got their only score. This was a hard fought and even game, and credit to a fine Navan performance. Tonights referee was Helen O’Reilly of Ashbourne, who has been selected to referee in the Ladies World Cup in August. Best of luck to Helen. Helen was ably assisted by Mark Power (Boyne RFC) and Hugh Early (Skerries RFC). Well done to Balbriggan; players, coaches and supporters.

Project Phoenix Update

As many of you know, Balbriggan RFC have worked for many years on a project to develop a swimming pool, together with clubhouse, on our home grounds. This project is intended to deliver a state of the art amenity for all the community in Balbriggan and surrounding areas.

In recent weeks there has been an intensified level of contact between Fingal Co Co and Balbriggan RFC in order to progress the project. Thanks to the efforts of Cllr Tom O’Leary, a meeting was held between the Office of Public Works, the Department of Sport and Fingal Co Co last Friday. At the meeting the three participants agreed a way forward and Cllr O’Leary reported to Balbriggan RFC on Saturday, that the project will go out for expressions of interest in May. This first stage will indicate if there are parties interested in developing the project. One way or another, we will know by the end of the Summer if the project is to proceed or if the club will have to look at other options. At Cllr O’Leary’s invitation, Club President Gerry Hennigan, and former Club President Robert Cashell, met with Minister James Reilly and Cllr O’Leary on Saturday, where they expressed their support in getting this project over the line. Later in the day Gerry also had communication with Minister Brian Hayes who is in charge of the OPW. Minister Hayes also expressed his support for Project Phoenix.

The Club would like to thank Cllr O’Leary for his efforts and we look forward to seeing the project move to some from of conclusion over the coming weeks. Hopefully interest will be shown in the project and that the town and community of Balbriggan will benefit from a much needed facility.
