Balbriggan Women’s team’s Cup campaign ended on Sunday with a loss away to Wanderers in the quarter-final of the Paul Cusack Cup. Final score 33 v 10. The Balbriggan ladies will be disappointed not to feature in the Cup final this season, having made it that far in the two previous seasons.
Wanderer’s Women’s team topped Leinster League Division 4 as runaway champions this season, and therefore will join Balbriggan in Divison 3 next season. As a development side, the lighter Wanderer’s pack chose to have uncontested scrums, something that was signalled to Balbriggan in advance of the match. As Wanderer’s were considered a developmental team, their wish to have uncontested scrums was accommodated and this meant one of Balbriggan Women’s great strengths, a strong scrummaging pack, was completely de-powered for this Cup encounter.
The Balbriggan Ladies have much to be proud of. They have put in a great season, progressing further in the league than last season. They are progressing year on year and are now the top placed women’s team in North Leinster. They finished third in the Leinster League, their highest position yet, in this their third year since Women’s rugby was re-established at Balbriggan RFC.
