O’Daly Festival at Balbriggan RFC

Sunday was a great day at Balbriggan RFC as we hosted the Leinster U12’s O’Daly Festival. 24 teams from all over Leinster took part in the Festival. Even the sun shone to help make our day extra special. All the mum’s who came to Balbriggan RFC today were given a bunch of flowers for Mother’s Day courtesy of the club.
We were delighted that Leinster players, Ian Nagle, Cathal Marsh and Barry Daly, along with Leo the Lion visited Balbriggan RFC to meet all the teams. Thanks to them for taking time out of their busy schedules.
Thanks to St John’s Ambulance for providing assistance on the day.
Marc at Java the Hut kept us in caffeine while Seamus at Froggy’s Crepes made lovely crepes. Thanks to Kate and Hope for running the tuck shop on the day. Thanks also to David and all the team at Fruit Shoot Ireland for providing Fruit Shoot Hydro drinks for all the teams. Thanks to John Doran and Adrian Mooney for the gazebo’s. John was here bright and early this morning to put up the gazebos at all the pitches.
A special mention must go to Gerry Buckley and Moriarty’s SuperValu Balbriggan, who made a beautiful cake to mark the occasion. We are really grateful to Lily Darcy who made all the sandwiches for the day.
The day would not have been such a success without the help of a number of people. Thanks to all those who did so much work behind the scenes to prepare the grounds for the Festival. The grounds really looked fantastic. We would also like to thank the volunteers who helped with traffic management. Thanks to Paul Downes for putting up the scaffolding for the group photo. Thanks to pitch co-ordinators Harley Harold, Gerry McCleery and Mal Malone.
None of this would have materialised without the efforts of Balbriggan RFC’s Mini’s Co-Ordinator Eamon Darcy. He put in a huge amount of work to ensure that the day was a success.
Finally, thanks to all the teams who travelled to Balbriggan RFC, despite the clocks going forward and also that it was Mother’s Day. We really appreciate your efforts that helped make the day the success that it was.

Wanderer’s v Balbriggan

Balbriggan Women’s team’s Cup campaign ended on Sunday with a loss away to Wanderers in the quarter-final of the Paul Cusack Cup. Final score 33 v 10. The Balbriggan ladies will be disappointed not to feature in the Cup final this season, having made it that far in the two previous seasons.
Wanderer’s Women’s team topped Leinster League Division 4 as runaway champions this season, and therefore will join Balbriggan in Divison 3 next season. As a development side, the lighter Wanderer’s pack chose to have uncontested scrums, something that was signalled to Balbriggan in advance of the match. As Wanderer’s were considered a developmental team, their wish to have uncontested scrums was accommodated and this meant one of Balbriggan Women’s great strengths, a strong scrummaging pack, was completely de-powered for this Cup encounter.
The Balbriggan Ladies have much to be proud of. They have put in a great season, progressing further in the league than last season. They are progressing year on year and are now the top placed women’s team in North Leinster. They finished third in the Leinster League, their highest position yet, in this their third year since Women’s rugby was re-established at Balbriggan RFC.

Pat Browne Qualifiers

The qualifiers for the Pat Browne Cup took place over the past two days at Balbriggan RFC. Local primary schools took part in the two day blitz which was thoroughly enjoyed by all who attended. The Cup is played in memory of the late Pat Browne, a former President of Balbriggan RFC.

There was some great talent on display over the two days. All participants received a medal for taking part. The winner from day 1 was St Molaga’s NS, and the winner from day 2 was St George’s NS. St Molaga’s and St George’s now go forward to the Cup final which will be played at the club next month.

Balbriggan Through To Next Round Of The Cup

Balbriggan beat Kilkenny in the second round of the 2nds Towns Cup on Sunday afternoon. Final score 41 v 22. Geordie Boyce scored a hat-trick of tries, and also converted three tries on a very windy afternoon at Bowhill. Skipper Ciaran Malone, Dave Healy, Mark Geraghty and Ruaidhrí O’Brien also scored one try each. This was a super performance by the team, who now have their last two League matches to play, before a quarter-final encounter with Ardee on March 26th. Credit must go to a fine Kilkenny outfit who, despite the score never dropped their heads and played to the very end. Well done to the lads from Balbriggan and to Kilkenny on a great match.
