The 5th annual North East Leinster Rugby Santa Blitz took place on Sunday morning at Balbriggan RFC with teams of U7’s, U8’s & U9’s from all over the North East area of Leinster taking part in the Blitz. Over 530 kids participated representing Balbriggan, Navan , Boyne, Dundalk, Skerries, Ratoath, Virginia, Ardee, Athboy and Ashbourne Rugby Clubs.
Santa Claus was on hand to watch the games and was impressed with the quality of rugby on view. He joined in the fun by participating in the warm-ups and was available for numerous photo opportunities.
The under 7/8/9’s are very strongly represented in the North East and the game of rugby continues to grow. This Santa Blitz is evidence, if it were needed, that the game is strong at Club underage level.
The 530+ were ably assisted on the day by more than 65 coaches. Upwards of 1000 parents were also present and were happy to see each player receive a selection box.
This annual event run by Balbriggan RFC also helps raise funds which are given to a special cause while providing the children with a small gift. This year’s designated charity was the Fr. Peter McVerry Trust, a charity with a focus on helping the homeless. In previous years the Blitz raised funds for SVP & Remember Us.
An event like this can only be made possible by the community spirit within the club and all the help of volunteers.
Balbriggan RFC would like to take the opportunity to thank all the clubs, players and parents who participated in Sundays Blitz. In particular, we would like to acknowledge and thank Eamon Darcy, Vice President and Mini Rugby Coordinator in Balbriggan RFC for the huge amount of work he did in organising this incredible event. Finally, many thanks to all the volunteers who helped with the Blitz on the day.
