Balbriggan’s U10s at the Aviva

On Saturday 23rd May, Balbriggan’s U10s were one of the lucky teams from around the country that were chosen to take part in a Mini’s Festival at the Aviva Stadium.

They got the rare opportunity to run out on the hallowed turf of the home of Irish Rugby. They then played rugby on the main pitch, cheered on from the stand by their families and friends. It was a great day for the club, and in particular for the U10’s team, that they will remember forever.

Thanks to Stephen Waldron for these photos.

Balbriggan RFC Mini’s

Balbriggan RFCs Minis wrapped up the season with a prize giving evening. All players were rewarded for their great efforts in the season with a medal each. Coaches and players alike showed great commitment in training and playing through a long season with many highs. Thanks to all the players and parents for their commitment to the club. Thanks to all the coaches who give so freely of their time. A special mention must go to Sarah Waldron who is there week in, week out, helping with the admin side of the minis. Thanks also to Paul Varga and Gerry McCleery for their hard work, much of it behind the scenes. And lastly, a huge thanks to Eamon Darcy who took over the Minis at the beginning of the season and did such an extraordinary job, including organising a trip to Italy for our U8s/9s & 10s, organising the North East Santa Blitz in Balbriggan, as well as the Pat Browne Cup, and organising the end of season prize-giving amongst many other events throughout the year. Thanks to all, and see you next season.

U13s Match Report & Photos

Roscrea 10 Balbriggan 7

The Balbriggan U13s went down narrowly to Roscrea in the league final in Naas on Sunday. In a very close match the Roscrea team just edged it. Roscrea had finished top of the league and while the two teams had not met, Roscrea had inflicted heavy defeats on other teams in the league. It was Roscrea who started stronger and it took Balbriggan a little time to get into the game but it was Roscrea who got on the scoreboard first with a try in the corner. Balbriggan then had a good spell and with Roscrea conceding penalties on their line Aitzol King took a quick penalty but lost the ball as he went over the line. Just at the end of the half Roscrea spread the ball wide to score in the corner. In the second half Balbriggan were up to the pace of the game and the play ebbed and flowed. Sean Garland and Aitzol King carried well and Keelan King was covering a lot of ground tackling everything. Balbriggan lost their lively scrum half Issac McGrath when he suffered a high tackle that went unpunished. As the match neared the end Balbriggan eventually breached the Roscrea line when flanker, Ciaran Darby got the ball down by reaching out his arm when tackled short of the line. King added the difficult conversion but the ref then blew for full time when there appeared to be still five minutes to play. Considering they started off the season not knowing if they would have 15 players this team has achieved a lot on their first season in youths rugby. Well done to them all.
